Reframing the Future ENcircles update The final ENcircles forum was held on September 19th and outcomes from the group of participants have been very beneficial in highlighting different training models for Enrolled Nursing in the NT. The forums also reinforced the view that the work of Enrolled Nurses is held in high regard within the profession. Roy Blohm (Group Training NT) gave a presentation to the group about the services offered by GTNT regarding employing apprentices. The group has agreed to meet on a regular basis and the first meeting will take place in November. Adult Learners Week HSTAC went into Smith Street Mall for Adult Learners Week in September with CHARTTES - the Cultural, Recreation and Tourism Advisory Council. It gave people a chance to find out more about training options, particularly for adult learners who might be interested in a career change, undertaking training to extend their skills. The response from the public was great, with 35 people requesting advice and information. The Language and Literacy kits developed by HSTAC were on display to demonstrate the support that is available when undertaking workplace training for early childhood workers, environmental health workers, community health workers, Aboriginal health workers, as well as board and council members.
Stand Up Resource Reprint HSTAC is delighted to announce that limited stocks of the award-winning multimedia resource Stand Up are once more available for purchase. Stand Up is an electronic resource containing one CD and one DVD. It was designed for use by Registered Training Organisations delivering the Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (also know as the TAA) and provides resources and activities to stimulate awareness of some of the language, literacy and numeracy issues encountered by Indigenous learners. It also provides strategies for ensuring inclusive practices in training delivery. Stand Up supports two units of competency in the Certificate IV in Training & Assessment:
Stand Up was developed with funding from the Australian Government Department of Eduation, Science & Training's 'Innovative Adult Literacy National Project 2006'. The team who created and developed Stand Up received the LearnX Asia Pacific 2008 prize for 'Best Cultural Diversity Training Program' in Melbourne earlier this year. You can purchase Stand Up from HSTAC for $150 (plus GST). Call us on (08) 8981 2550 or send us an email at: admin@hstac.com.au

Rachael's News "Well, it's been quite some time now since I last had any input into Humbytes. I finally have good news. Very good news, in fact. I can safely say I have now completed my studies and have obtained my Certificate III in Business. What a road, what an achievement! Initially, I had placed very high expectations on myself and had hoped to have completed this course with ease. Due to other responsibilities, it didn't all go as planned. However, there is light and that is where I am. And some further good news! After having obtained my driver's licence at the end of last year, I have finally purchased a car and now have that lot of extra freedom. After 16 years of pushing wheelchairs, prams, holding, or assisting someone to walk, I'm now hands free or legs free besides the steering wheel!" Rachael.
Farewell Marilyn HSTAC's Operations Manager, Marilyn Harris, finished her time with us last week. It's been very sad for us to say goodbye, however, we know that she will make an enormous contribution when she begins her new job with the Tiwi Islands Shire Council. After being unavoidably separated from her partner by the Clarence Strait, Marilyn is now off to join him and to work with the Tiwi Islands Shire Council. HSTAC is very grateful to Marilyn for all that she has done to improve the organisation - from streamlining office procedures and project management, sourcing funding and helping with the professional development of admin staff. Her efforts are greatly appreciated and we wish her all the very best.
2008 Careers Expo Earlier this year, HSTAC exhibited at the Careers Expos in Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Katherine and Nhulunbuy. HSTAC's theme this year was Early Childhood work, which can encompass many different jobs - such as childcare, nursing, speech pathology, disability services, nutritionists, psychologists, and child protection practitioners. In order to engage with students visiting the expos, HSTAC had prepared an Early Childhood Quiz, and one student from each expo won a CD of their choice. Congratulations to the following students:
The expos were busy with lots of exhibitors competing for the interest and attention of the students. HSTAC did well, engaging with and encouraging students to take the Early Childhood Quiz or discuss training and careers. We managed to entice the following percentages of students to take our quiz:
(72 out of a total of 460 students, with 46 exhibitors present)
(65 out of a total of 270 students, with 26 exhibitors present)
(58 out of a total of 700 students, with 80 exhibitors present)
(87 out of a total of 300 students, with 30 exhibitors present). We look forward to the Careers Expos next year!
