OUT AND ABOUT WITH RACHAEL
(Rachael Saywell is HSTAC's Office Assistant - see following article)

Since commencing work mid-April as the new Office Assistant, I have had the privilege of accompanying Narelle Higginson (HSTAC's Disability Coordination Officer) to a meeting at Batchelor Institute to catch up with Nerissa, their Disability Support Worker, to see how things are going. After a recent audit of the campus, the Institute has made some improvements as well as discussing what more can be done to improve the day-to-day living conditions of the disabled students on campus.

I also attended a workshop with Narelle hosted by Australian Apprenticeships NT to discuss possible ways in which to encourage people with a disability into the workforce. At the meeting I had the opportunity to meet people who work in the disability industry, which is very useful for me on a work level as well as a personal one.

Back at the office, I am kept busy answering the phone, picking up the mail etc. I have also commenced some online training which will not only aid me in the position I am currently holding, but also for what may lay ahead in my future. After all, knowledge is the greatest gift after life itself!

THE HUM @ HSTAC

In keeping with its stated objective of providing leadership and advice on vocational education and training and to ensure quality outcomes in the delivery of human services; its active role in developing a skilled workforce, and its practice of employing trainees and providing work experience for people with a disability and/or in straightened circumstances, HSTAC has recently undertaken two interesting initiatives:

  • Trainee Council Members
At its meeting in March this year, Barbara Pitman, HSTAC's Executive Officer, put to Council what she described as a succession plan - a trainee/mentor structure for Council membership to provide opportunities for people who are interested in membership of boards or councils, but do not understand the roles and responsibilities involved.

The suggestion was greeted with enthusiasm by members and we now have four trainee Council members across the Health and Local Government sectors who will attend the next Council meeting on 8 June!

The selection criteria for trainees is that they currently work in health, community services, local government or correctional services, are interested in how boards and councils work and have the support of their employer to participate. Trainees will have observer status and speaking rights at Council meetings.

Selection criteria for the mentor is that they are currently a HSTAC Council member, have the capacity to support the trainee and have the support of their employer to participate.

  • Trainee Office Assistant
On 16 April, Rachael Saywell started work with HSTAC as trainee Office Assistant. Rachael was employed through Jobfind and will work 20 hours a week with HSTAC, during which time she will continue an online training schedule from Jobfind and take lessons to obtain her driver's licence. The Executive Officer and Administration Officer will be responsible for her on-the-job training. Read more>>

HSTAC is very proud of Richard Singh, who worked with HSTAC as a trainee office worker for 18 months, during which time he completed Certificate III in Business and was a finalist in the 2005 NT Training Awards.

Richard then moved on to become a Field Officer with the Northern Land Council in Nhulunbuy, and has now returned to participate with HSTAC as a newly elected Council member!
