EDUCATION REVOLUTION FOR COMMUNITY SERVICES AND HEALTH

The Community Services & Health Industry Skills Council (CSHISC) will hold an innovative and exciting conference in Adelaide on the 15th & 16th of October entitled Making a Difference... ...The Education Revolution - It's Happening!

The conference will bring the Health and Community Services sectors together to focus on what the Skilling Australia for the Future Policy will mean for our sectors. The CS&H Industry Skills Council is leading the way to ensure that industry needs are addressed and Registered Training Organisation standards are met during the implementation of the Productivity Places Program.

Speakers on the preliminary program include the Hon. Julia Gillard, Dr. Estelle Irving (Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne), Peter Carver (National Health Workforce Taskforce), Jonathon Welch (The Choir of Hard Knocks), Joan Hughes (Carers Australia), and Nicole Highet (beyondblue). THE HUM @ HSTAC

Stand Up is a winner!!

As we reported in the June edition of Humbytes, the creative team behind the Stand Up multimedia resource collected the prize for the LearnX Asia Pacific 2008 Best Cultural Diversity Training Program. The trophy was awarded to the team in Melbourne on Friday 13th of June and now takes pride of place on the HSTAC mantlepiece.

ADULT LITERACY CONFERENCE

The 31st Annual Conference of the Austalian Council for Adult Literacy will run between October 2nd and 4th this year at the Crowne Plaza in Surfers' Paradise on the Gold Coast. The title of this year's conference is Surfing outside the flags: Catching waves, avoiding rips. The conference is open to anybody with an interest in adult literacy and numeracy in communities, workplaces, educational and training institutions, and governments. It will cover themes such as Indigenous literacy and numeracy, vocational and workplace literacy and numeracy, community literacy, and the literacy and numeracy needs of the African refugee community.

Keynote speakers for the conference include Noyona Chanda (Assistant Director Language & Literacy Unit at London Southbank University) and Dr Hermine Scheeres (Associate Professor, Faculty of Education, University of Technology, Sydney). There are also a number of seminars and workshops planned, which will be presented by practitioners, teachers and researchers. A pre-conference forum will be held on October 2nd to focus on establishing a cross-sectoral dialogue. 2008 CAREERS EXPO

The 2008 Careers Expos are less than a month away, with the first Expo set to kick off in Darwin on Wednesday 6th of August. The Expos aim to be a forum for Year 10 - 12 students to find information about training, employment, and careers. They are also a great place for business, industry, and training providers to develop networks and relationships.

This year HSTAC will focus on the theme of Early Childcare Work, and we are currently putting together the finishing touches for a bright, colourful, interesting and informative booth. You can find HSTAC at the following venues on the following dates:

  • Tennant Creek: Civic Hall, Peko Street - Wednesday 13th August,
  • Alice Springs: St Philips College, Schwartz Cres - Thursday 14th August (evening).
  • Katherine: Katherine High School, Grevillea Road - Monday 18th August.
  • Nhulunbuy: Town Hall, Chesterfield Circuit - Wednesday 20th August.

HSTAC won't be at the Darwin Careers Expo this year, but will have a booth at all of the above venues. For further information you can call us on 08 8981 2550.
