THE PUGGY HUNTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME

The Minister for Health and Ageing has launched this year's call for applications for the Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarships.

Indigenous students interested in working in the health industry can apply for one of 75 scholarships commencing in 2007.

The Royal College of Nursing, Australia is the administrator of the scholarship scheme, funded through the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH).

The aim of the scheme is to help address the under representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in health professions, and assist in increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with professional health qualifications.

The scheme provides financial assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who undertake or intend to enrol in the study of Nursing, Medicine, Certificate III and IV or Diploma and Advanced Diploma Aboriginal Health Worker Course, Health Management or Allied Health at an educational institution, university or Registered Training Organisation.

To obtain a scholarship under this scheme applicants must be able to provide evidence that they are accepted as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent in the community in which they live, or have lived. For this purpose their status as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander should be confirmed in writing by the Chairperson of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander incorporated organisation in a community in which the applicant lives, or has previously lived. Confirmation in writing from an incorporated body related to an academic institution will not be acceptable.

Applications close at 5pm on Friday 25 August 2006.
