Natalie Hunter, Director of Karu Aboriginal Child Care Agency, attended the Sisters Inside Conference in Melbourne in 2005 and classes it as one of the best conferences she has ever attended. The conference is based on reality and deals with the high increase of women entering the prison system and what happens to the children when the women are incarcerated. If you work in or have an interest in this chosen field - this conference is for you. Natalie is the contact person in Darwin for Sisters Inside and would be very happy with any assistance to make the conference happen. Please supply the names of any services who would be interested in attending, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, and contact Julianne Brown or Natalie Hunter at Karu on (08) 8922 7171. If you have any suggestions regarding suitable venues or locations to hold the conference, Debbie Kilroy will be in Darwin on 2-3 March and she can be contacted by phone on (07) 3844 5066 or email: deb@sistersinside.com.au. MORE HEARING RESOURCES FOR INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANSIndigenous Australians aged 50 years and over will receive greater access to hearing services through a $10.1 million program announced on 1 December 2005 by the Minister for Ageing, Julie Bishop, and the Minister for Human Services, Joe Hockey. Ms Bishop said, 'Approximately 18% of Indigenous Australians have reported ear or hearing problems. As people get older the rate of hearing loss increases, with greater impact on males than females. 'From today, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over will have access to free hearing assessment services. 'I encourage Indigenous people over the age of 50 to have their hearing tested. 'If you require assistance, such as a hearing aid, this can also be provided by Hearing Services Australia, with just a small fee for battery supply,' Ms Bishop said. ' If you are having hearing difficulties, or know someone who does, I encourage you to call 131 797 to make an appointment'. Australian Hearing has permanent and visiting hearing centres in all capital cities and many regional and small towns. Australian Hearing also has visiting services to many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia. Free hearing services are also available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people up to 21 years of age on the Community Development Employment Project, veterans, Pensioner Concession Card holders and to people referred by CRS Australia. Contacts: Murray Hansen (Minister Bishop) 0417 886 155 or Nadia Levin (Minister Hickey) 0437 978 028.
