Working Communities International Congress 24-26 March 2010

Time is running out to save money with an early bird registration for the Working Communities International Congress - only 3 weeks remain to get tickets at a discounted price. Local Government Investment Conference 2010

Government News will present the inaugural Local Government Investment Conference on Tuesday 9 March this year at Doltone House, Pyrmont, Sydney. The conference will provide a forum for open and frank discussion on the challenges of local government investing in a post GFC world, and is designed for anyone with fiduciary obligations, such as Council General Managers, Financial Services Managers, and Councillors.

The conference features a line-up of speakers from Government and tertiary institutions, including John Evans (Associate Professor of Actuarial Studies, UNSW), Ross Woodward (Dept of Local Government), Michael Allen (General Manager, Treasury at TCorp), Peter Dorrian (Head of Retail Investments, PIMCO AUSTRALIA), and Anthony Serhan (Managing Director, Intech). Early Days Workshops

Early Days is a program for parents and carers of children under the age of 6 years who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, or are undergoing the diagnostic process.

These workshops are free of charge, held in small groups of 4-10, and lunch is provided. Families who attend are eligible to receive a $100 support payment to cover travel and childcare costs. Childcare will not be available at the workshops.

The workshops will help parents and carers to understand more about Autism Spectrum Disorder and what the disorder means for their child and their family. Practical strategies will be taught that can make a difference to children's development, and parents and carers will learn how to choose therapies and to get the most out of services.

The workshops will be held at the following locations and dates:

  • Palmerston Monday 1 March
  • Katherine Monday 8 March
  • Alice Springs Tuesday 16 March
  • Tennant Creek Thursday 18 March

Picture Exchange Communication Workshop

The Picuture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a language training package that is used to rapidly teach communication skills to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication without lengthy prerequisite training. The SoSafe! program is a set of visual and conceptual tools designed to promote social safety for people with moderate to severe intellectual disability and/or autism spectrum disorder.

Autism NT will run PECS/SoSafe! workshops in Alice Springs and Katherine in March and May on the following dates:

  • Alice Springs 3 & 4 March: Two-Day PECS Basic; 5 March: SoSafe
  • Katherine 17 & 18 May: Two-Day PECS Basic; 19 May: SoSafe

Home at Alawa - Healthscope Community Programs

HealthScope's House at Alawa Special Care Facility provides special accommodation to people with Acquired Brain Injury or other physical disabilities and is part of HealthScope's Community Programs. There is a local Darwin Coordinator on site, and care and support is provided through links with Darwin Private Hospital. The facility is a home-like environment where residents are enabled to maximize independence and lifestyle choices. Clients families and others are encouraged to be active and involved and are always welcome.

Apprentice Kickstart Bonus

Government Bonus for Employers taking on Australian Apprentices

A bonus is currently available to employers who employ an Australian Apprentice aged 19 years or younger who is undertaking a Certificate III or IV qualification leading to a skills shortage trade occupation.

In order to receive the bonus, employers must meet eligibility requirements under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program. Eligible apprentices must commence employment prior to 28 February.

Grant Application & Report Writing Workshops

For the past two years, the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (AER) have been running a series of highly successful workshops on grant application, report writing, financial management and corporate governance to enhance the capacity of the Alcohol and Other Drugs sector.

New Report on Employment Opportunities in the Human Services Industries

Human Services Training Advisory Council has recently completed its twice-annual report on advertised job opportunities in the Health, Community Services, Local Government and Correctional Services sectors. The report uses data taken from the July-December half of 2009 and presents the data for each region of the Territory, comparing it with data from the previous report period (January-June 2009).
