'NO MORE PLAYING AROUND'

The 'No More Playing Around' early childhood workforce public forum held on 2 August 2006, hosted by Human Services Training Advisory Council and the Early Childhood Workforce Advisory Group, was a big success with 140 people attending.

We would like to thank you all for making the evening the success it undoubtedly was.

During the evening guests were asked to complete a survey designed to give us the demographic of those attending the forum. We are delighted that 86 (61.4%!) of you completed the survey and, as a result, we are able to tell you that:

  • 96.5% were female
  • 3.5% were male
  • 37% were aged between 36 - 45
  • 32.5% were aged between 46 - 55
  • 38.3% live in the northern suburbs
  • 15.1% live in inner city suburbs
In response to the question: What do you think are the most important early childhood workforce issues? The top 4 were:
  • Higher wages - 38.4%
  • Lack of status/recognition - 36%
  • Lack of qualified staff - 29%
  • Training/skills development - 26.7%
In response to the question: Have your career expections been met?
  • Yes - 45.3%
  • No - 10.45%
  • Yes and No - 8.1%

Very, very interesting!

CAREERS EXPO 2006

The Careers Expo is a once a year opportunity for students, teachers, parents and other people in the Northern Territory to exhibit and participate in this event which helps young people to identify possibile career paths to reach their future goals.

This year HSTAC used the theme of Emotional Health and Wellbeing to provide information to students on careers in the human services sector at Expos in Tennant Creek, Alice Springs and Katherine earlier this month.

The Expos were very efficiently and effectively organised by CHARTTES Training Advisory Council (many thanks and congratulations to Marcia and Miranda), and were well attended by both school and family groups.

The final Expo for 2006 will be held at Nhulunbuy High School on Monday 28 August.

WHAT'S NEW FROM NARELLE (Narelle Higginson is Disability Coordination Officer at HSTAC)

Australian Government launches new JobAccess website for people with a disability

On Friday 11 August 2006, the Commonwealth government's new JobAccess site for people with disabilities was launched.

JobAccess is a comprehensive, free, one-stop shop website for people with a disability, employers, co-workers and service providers to get advice and resources for employing people with a disability. It also has a call centre to support it!

A recent Human Rights Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) press release applauded the launch:

"Whether you need to know where you can get a phone for an employee with a hearing impairment, what government allowances may be available for workplace support, or information about your rights and responsibilities in the workplace, this site has the answers," said Graeme Innes, Human Rights and Disability Discrimination Commissioner.

"The website is supported by a call centre from which further information and advice will be available. This service will remove the information barrier currently stopping many people with a disability from getting a job. It's a great step forward in this area," Commissioner Innes said.
