National Accolades for Excellence 2009
The Accolades are an avenue to showcase, acknowledge and applaud best practice workforce skills and development within the community services and health industries. The success of modern enterprises to deliver quality community and health services is heavily dependent upon the quality and consistency of the contribution made by the workforce.
Human Services Training Advisory Council was the winner of Accolade 1- Workforce Development in Community Services. This accolade acknowledges the significant work and innovative approach to planning and managing workforce development in a small not for profit organisation.
CAAPS and HSTAC lead the country in Community Services Training
In a show of strength and commitment to making the Northern Territory’s community services the best in Australia; two local organisations have come out on top of a national contingent of high profile service providers in the AUSTRALIAN SAFER COMMUNITIES AWARDS. The Council for Aboriginal Alcohol Program Services Inc (CAAPS) and the Human Services Training Advisory Council Inc (HSTAC) were Highly Commended for the Sundowner Project, funded by the Australian Flexible Learning Framework. This came after their win in the Northern Territory Safer Communities Awards 2009.
The Sundowner Project is a story telling tool to support learning through seeing, hearing and doing, in an interactive DVD format. Distributed to 73 community night patrols, the project used stories and experiences gathered through travelling across the Northern Territory. The DVD allows new night patrollers to be able to see the experiences of others (SEE), hear their stories (HEAR) and then apply this knowledge in their workplace (DO). As the main focus of the night patroller’s stories was safety, the DVD provides a safety induction for new workers based on the two nationally accredited training units. Livin’ In A House
The Livin’ in A House song and concept grew out of collaboration between Human Services Training Advisory Council. Skinnyfish Music and George Rrurrambu.
The purpose of the song is to support Indigenous Environmental Health Workers who do important work in remote Aboriginal communities which helps to deliver better primary health outcomes for the families who live in these communities.
The work is closely associated with the challenge of living in a new house, including understanding how everything works, and managing the living arrangements on a day to day basis. (Read more about Livin' in a House)
